Cutting + Styling Tree Branches 101

Right around spring time, we, home enthusiasts get the sudden urge to forage our trees bringing in our blooming branches from the outside, in. However, when doing this it is imperative to do it correctly so you don’t harm your trees. Not to worry, we’ve got you covered. Here are six tips to proper branch cutting + styling, of course.

Have the Proper Cutting Tools

Using the right tools will ensure that you do not damage the tree or ruin its branches. Hand pruners are perfect for cutting branches that are 1 inch in diameter or less. However, if you are cutting a branch that is about 2 inches in diameter, use lopping shears. They’re a bit bigger and can handle thicker branches. Lastly, pruning saws are ideal for when cutting branches with a diameter of 3 inches or more. Proper tools for proper cutting.

Cut Branches at a 45 Degree Angle

This is extremely important for several reasons. Cutting at a 45 degree angle allows for water absorption which keeps branches fresh longer. It also leaves the tree with perfect exposure to heal itself and allow for the continuation of growth.

Don’t Cut Beyond the Branch Collar

The branch collar is the swollen part of the tree trunk that attaches the branch to the trunk itself. Think of it as the shoulder blade of the tree. Cutting too close to the branch collar will inevitably damage your tree, so ensure to cut a couple of inches away.

Don’t Cut too Many Branches

We love a good, full branch arrangement but cutting more than 25% of the branches of a young tree or more than 20% of older more mature trees will cause a stint in growth and potentially harm your tree.

Now inside we go,

Keep Branches in a Cooler Room and Away From Direct Sunlight

Some branches may flourish, but it is best to keep branches away from direct sunlight to play it safe. Additionally, keep your arrangement in a room or place that doesn’t get too hot. This will allow them to really bloom and continue to stay fresh longer.

Go at it. Style Those Branches.

Now for the part we all set out to do when foraging our trees. Choose an appropriate vase based on the location of your choosing. Smaller vases for coffee table styling, bigger vases for kitchen island styling, and so forth. Cut branches at different lengths to create height and allow for a more “wild” look to showcase the variation of their form.

We hope you find these tips helpful and make styling branches part of Your Story of Home.
